The VanFossen (Van Fossen) family has been very thoroughly researched, and I'm sure there's a coat of arms for Van Fossen online. I'm not into that kind of thing, but I'll check with the other VanFossen family researchers. Many coat of arms are made up for sale rather than fact.

As for the Germany connection, our VanFossen family is descendant from Arnold Van Vossen, who arrived in the United States on a boat from Germany in 1700, but he and the family were from the Netherlands, not Germany. In the middle of the 1800s, the family started using Van Fossen. We also have relatives with Van Fossan spelling. We've not yet found any proof of a connection with "Von".

We'll have more VanFossen information posted here soon.

Good for you for showing an interest in your family. As the article explains, start with what you know and then fill in the blanks. Get more than names and dates. Find out where they went to school, what sports or hobbies they had, if they had special skills or abilities like carving, sewing, needlework, cooking, etc. Make lots of notes and charts and check out the many Native American heritage and family history and genealogy sites. It doesn't take long to flesh out a family tree. Go for it.

And enjoy the mysteries along the way.
