I was wondering....
Isn't there an old movie that had a story line on this topic (Floating logs down the river?)
And if so, was it about your relatives?
 Thanks!

My uncle took those pictures and that is the boat he worked on. He would know best the name. I have just started researching the history of that area. It's very possible. It's a common enough name and there might be I, II, and III. :D

Thanks for the picture of the Skagit Chief, the 50 foot tug in the artical by Robert Knapp. I'm a bit confused. I know of a newer tug also called the Skagit Chief, and an old stern wheeler from about 1905 called the Skagit Chief. The stern wheeler Skagit Cheif resumblies the Skagit Queen, also a stern wheeler. It looks like the boat name Skagitr Chief may have been used on 3 different boats.

Wow, that's wonderful. I'd love a digital image of the painting and/or photograph for our Elwell family to post here.

I hope to have a lot more Elwell family information posted here soon. Thanks!

Joe Parker was my Great Grand Father. I have a painting of the Ora Elwell hanging in my living room. Laurie Wells was the artist who painted it from an old family photo. The painting is out by Goat island with a full tow of logs headed into the bay. The Ora is named after Capt Elwells daughter if memory serves me correct.

Our Robert Knapp wasn't yet in Washington State and 11 years old in 1924. He and his family arrived in the early 1930s. The "Dells" is the Wisconsin Dells, now a popular vacation spot in Wisconsin. The Dalles is where my father and his sister lived for many years, and his sister raised her family. That is in Oregon, on the Columbia River.

I will definitely check out the Skagit River History site, as that played an important part in our family's history, too. Thanks!

There was another Robert Knapp. See Robert E.L. Knapp, Skagit County Engineer, Testimony for 11/26/1924 Hearing at www.skagitriverhistory.com. Any relation? Also the Dells referred to in your story, shouldn't that be "The Dalles" or did it use to be called the Dells and someone changed the name?
