with Lorelle and Brent VanFossen

Category Archives: 2005

Beginning at the end of 2004, we moved from Israel back to the United States. The culture shock or returning after five years is something we are still coping with. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we didn’t expect it to be such a challenge.

We’ve moved back into our trailer after five years of sitting in storage, and we have returned to life lived in a campground as one of the “white trailer trash” – okay, not really but it sounds so funny – in Mobile, Alabama. We hope you enjoy the lessons we’ve learned not only coming back to the states but learning to live, once again, in the southern United States.

Happy Ramahanukwanzaamas!

Happy Ramahanukawanzaamas! We heard this greeting on the radio in Seattle a few days ago and Brent has been saying it to everyone. It is Happy Ramadan, Happy Hanuka, Happy Kawanzaas, and Happy Christmas all wrapped up into one word. We have just returned to Alabama from a very cold and snowy week in Seattle […]

All We Want For Christmas is Nothing

“People just don’t understand.” So comments Brent as we try to explain to my father that we don’t want anything for Christmas. “Honestly, we don’t want anything.” Unfortunately, he, like everyone else, doesn’t understand that we really do not want anything for Christmas, or birthdays, or any other gift giving holiday. What you all don’t […]

Travel, Computer Shopping, and Other Holiday Tips

I’m barely home from a mad dash cross country trip driving across the United States from Seattle back to Alabama in a small motor home, and I have to turn around and fly back to Seattle next week, so I’m busy rushing about doing last minute holiday shopping and cleaning up. In the middle of […]

Layover in Tulsa

My father and I have made it to Tulsa, Oklahoma, home of my in-laws, for a brief layover. With a day and a half spent with my father’s aunt and uncle near Palm Springs, California, a day with his step daughter in Phoenix, and a lot of driving, we’ve covered several thousand miles from Seattle […]

On the Road – Seattle to Mobile

I am currently on the road driving my father from Seattle to Mobile in his Class C motor home. This is a great lesson in how NOT to stay connected to the Internet though I’m having better luck in some places than I thought. We are currently in Desert Hot Springs, California, visiting his aunt […]

Article About Us – Accessibility Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

Eyes Apart: Living with strabismus, a blog by Lois, who suffers with Strabismus which causes one or both eyes to not point in the same direction at the same time. She has written a lovely article about this site, Taking Your Camera on the Road, highlighting the fact that producing a website that meets web […]

Two Months After Hurricane Katrina – Into New Orleans

Not knowing the intimate details of the damage left behind from Hurricane Katrina, I assumed I’d seen the worst of it in Ocean Springs. Everyone talks about how bad New Orleans is, but from the little television and Internet coverage I saw before making this journey, buildings were still standing in New Orleans, so this […]

Two Months After Hurricane Katrina – Pascagoula to Ocean Springs Mississippi

It’s been two months since Hurricane Katrina brought her wrath and forces to the Gulf Coast of the United States. In Israel, after a terrorist bombing of a restaurant, cafe, or night club, it is the general policy of the people to do everything possible to make sure the bombed site is open for business […]

Two Months After Hurricane Katrina – Gulf Coast Shores

I’m in New Orleans and access to the Internet is very complicated and difficult. I will write more about my experiences here, but here are some photos taken on the drive over along Highway 90 through the Gulf Shore area of Mississippi. I want you to remember that this area is almost 100 miles from […]

Lorelle’s Hurricane Soap Box

Living in the hurricane ravaged dart board for the past year, I have become a cynic when it comes to disaster relief and disaster victims. And I’m not happy about what I’m hearing about the problems with Hurricane Wilma. So forgive my momentary soap box. Hurricane Katrina was not expected to suddenly turn so ugly, […]

Making Brent Happy by Making Brent Make Ice Cream

As a reward for his new job in North Carolina 7 years ago, we splurged on a small ice cream maker for Brent. It slid right into our freezer with not a paper-width of room to spare. It made 4-6 small servings but that was plenty for us. Brent started right away experimenting. One of […]

Trailers for Hurricane Victims

I found this posted by allthatjazz01 Coffee Talk on her AOL blog: Driving south on I57 from Indianapolis, we noticed that every fifth vehicle was a new travel trailer towed by a pick up truck. At first I thought there must be a lot of campers till I realized that these trailers were going to […]

Ain’t Hurricane Season Over YET?

After Hurricane Alpha was blown away by Hurricane Wilma, I thought maybe we would have a reprieve. NOT. A Public Advisory from NOAA on Tropical Storm Beta states that this new storm should turn into a hurricane by this evening. Computer models from Weather Underground show Beta moving into Nicaragua and bringing 10-20 inches of […]

Lorelle is Wearing Socks

Yes! Lorelle is wearing socks. This might not seem like a monumental event for you, but for those who know me, this is unprecedented. I put on socks this morning and did a little dance around our trailer singing, “I’m wearing socks. I’m wearing saw-awks. I’m weeeeee-ring sock-sock-sock-sock-socks!” The only thing that kept Hurricane Wilma […]

Tropical Storm Alpha is Born

Ever since the formation of two major hurricanes in July made it clear that the Hurricane Season of 2005 was going to challenge 1933 as the busiest season ever, I’ve been expecting to see the words “Tropical Storm Alpha” emblazoned on a hurricane tracking chart. Well, we’ve got the record now. The formation of Tropical […]
